Origins. The place name Peramola is of Latin origin, Petram Molam —”mass of stone”, “stone shaped like a millstone”—, probably identifying a striking spot: the Corb rock. The town of Peramola is the historic capital of the barony of Peramola —today a municipality—, which also takes in the places of Castell-llebre, Cortiuda, Nuncarga and Tragó. All five are a thousand years old, and we find them documented as a castle, a parish or a “villa”. Before the urban settlements existed, troglodyte life was lived in various rock shelters or caves of the area, the best known of which are those of el Corb and Jou.
Duration: 30′ – We’ll begin the walk at the public washhouse, from where we’ll make our way into the medieval core, with arcaded streets —some with ogival arches—, interesting gateways and two singular, peaceful little squares: la Sal and Sant Joan.
In the Plaça Josep Roca —formerly the Plaça Nova or Plaça Major— we’ll find cal Ribó (17th c.), with beam ends on the balcony, as well as the parish church of Sant Miquel Arcàngel (14th c.). The Casino building, at the Cap del Carrer, preserves a beautiful set of the old barrel vaults of the Peramola castle.
Outside the town, we can visit the Romanesque chapel of Sant Miquel Arcàngel (11th c.), in the old cemetery, and the chapel of the Mare de Déu del Roser, from the late Renaissance (16th c.), which the priest Joan Puig, a native of Peramola, had built in fulfilment of a promise to the Virgin while he was in danger.
The municipality has a great wealth of water, coming from the many springs that rise here and that are well worth getting to know.
Duration: 45′ – We therefore suggest the Camí de les Fonts (Path of the Springs), a walk through a setting rich in water, birds and vegetation. You’ll find the medieval bridge of the Vila spring; the remains of the old Manteguera, next to the Mig spring; the Caner spring, the corner dedicated to the poet Martí i Pol, with the wheel of the first water-lifting device of the town of Peramola, and the Cristo and Poble springs.
