The origins of the village of Ogern are set between the first foothills of the Serra d’Oliana, to the north, and the Ribera Salada, to the south. The first documentary reference dates back to the year 1044. It mentions Miró and Ermessenda, probably the first lords of Ogern Castle, a castle with three towers, two of which are still preserved: ca l’Isidro and cal Ganyet. The castle also had a medieval mill and a chapel.
Let’s take a walk through Ogern’s historical heritage, and as points of interest we recommend:
Sant Serni de la Salsa, 11th century: the Romanesque church of Sant Serni was documented in 1904. Near the church there are anthropomorphic tombs and a medieval oil press, all carved into the rock.
Sant Serni d’Ogern, 20th century: the former parish of La Salsa was moved to a group of houses being built by the roadside, near Ogern Castle, where the current church was built in 1918.
Ca l’Isidro. Rectangular tower which, together with cal Ganyet, was one of the three towers of Ogern Castle. On the ground floor there was a flour mill. It was later restored as a defensive tower and dwelling.
Cal Ganyet. Fortified house, almost square in plan, notable for a watchtower on the southeast corner. It was one of the three towers of Ogern Castle.
El pont d’Ogern, 18th century. At the eastern end of the village stands the four-arched bridge, recently restored, which for many years was the only bridge crossing the Ribera Salada.
Camí ral: the royal road from Solsona to Oliana came from Madrona, crossed the Ogern bridge and entered the village. Today, its route can still be followed in some visible sections, such as Ogern’s main street.
