Saint James' way

The Saint James’ Way dates back to the year 814 and the discovery of the sepulchre of the apostle who evangelised the Iberian Peninsula. Since that time, it has become a pilgrims’ route for the whole continent of Europe. Although there have been fluctuations in pilgrim numbers over the years, the last quarter of the twentieth century has seen a true resurgence in its popularity. It has become a prestigious route from all social, tourist, cultural, sporting and religious perspectives.

Way of Saint Josep Maria Escrivà

Saint Josep Maria Escrivà, a priest born in Barbastro, was one of the initial members of Opus Dei. During the Civil War both he and his brothers in faith were threatened by the religious persecution of the time. Because of the imminent danger and his wish to continue preaching the faith, after considerable meditation he decided to leave Madrid, where he had been to that time, and head for Barcelona in order thereafter to walk over the Pyrenees to Lourdes. The time spent on this secret pilgrimage was hard yet Saint Josep Maria Escrivà never lost faith. In fact, quite the opposite occurred, as became apparent in the faith acquired among the people around him.

Saint Ermengol's Way

Saint Ermengol was a great innovator in the region of the Pyrenees and Pre-Pyrenees who built great constructions and undertook important social and religious initiatives. Saint Ermengol’s Way visits sites associated with his life such as his place of birth, Aiguatèbia. It also goes by Pont de Bar, where he died on 3 November 1035 upon falling in the Segre when visiting work on the bridge over the gully of Els Pontarrons and Els Tresponts. This is an important section of path and Romanesque bridges built by Bishop Ermengol, which to mark the Millennium are to be restored and recovered. In addition to the cathedral of Seu d’Urgell, other sites include the Romanesque chapel of Sant Ermengol, in Tiurana, and the Sanctuary of Sant Dubte, in Ivorra, which was the scene of a miracle in 1010 at the start of his term as bishop. His millennium will be celebrated in 2010.
